

Nakabonye Euphrasie, 83, of Kigali, Rwanda raises one granddaughter Umuhoza Vanessa, 15 whose mother died in 2000 of AIDS. She had eight of her own children, seven have died: some during the war, others in refugee camps, one of AIDS. “I don’t think I can do much for Vanessa because I am nothing, I have nothing. But I’m happy to have her near me.”
