"Driving
through the rolling hills of Southern Alberta a couple of days before July
1, the landscape looks like a painting; pastel greens and yellows under
an endless deep blue sky; I ask myself, what have we done to deserve all
this? For so few to have so much clean, beautiful, bountiful space--we really
are very lucky. I don't think we have to wave the flag to be patriotic,
but maybe we take our good fortune too much for granted. This is what I
think to myself when I look around on July 1.
I set out on a thirteen-year project on that day in 1997, to document the
strange rituals and patriotic festivities across the country, on Canada
Day. Every July 1-- I am in a different province or territory, until all
thirteen are covered”
